“The Life that Surrounds You” captures a moment in transition. The season is changing but time is fluid. The variance in colour and vibrancy of the leaves represents the diversity of the living things in our lives. The solid base of the tree can allow for absorption or reflection of colour. One may see the tree as solitary and the leaves as an external decoration without connection. This may be a phase of protection or distance from others. The bark becomes a wall keeping us inside and insentient. Another may see the life surrounding the tree as evolving, connected, and reciprocal. The leaves are part of the tree, even in their detached state. This phase is one of self-acceptance and embracement of all the life around us. As one of us sees the despair of leaves set in the motion of decay, another sees the circular comfort of connection in the remaining colour and form. This is where the fluidity of time plays with our perspective. One moment captured can represent and emote decades of our being. “The Life that Surrounds You” may offer an oppositional perspective at different times dependent on the viewer’s lens. My intention is that there is an anchor in the majesty of this moment that creates joy, assurance, or clarity for everyone who engages with it.
